Chapter Nine

Friday, May 4th, time unknown

He woke with a start.

Dawn had crept its way through the trees and offered enough light for him to barely make out his surroundings. He had not intended to fall asleep, but exhaustion had eventually claimed him. If Victor’s men had not found them by then, he doubted they were still looking in the dark. However, with dawn’s arrival, the search would begin anew. Nothing would be left to chance.

He could not be certain, but he sensed that he and Renee were still amid the thirty-eight acres considered traversable park land. This could be helpful. Park rangers frequently roved the area. The chances for rescue were quite significant, whether he could find the way out or not.

This was good.

The woman in his arms still slept soundly. She would need her strength and her courage to make the journey back to a more civilized trail. There were many trails and narrow roads; it was only a matter of finding one before his brother’s men found them.

Perhaps he underestimated her. She had, after all, climbed into that SUV with the intention of doing what she could to help him.

She snuggled against him, the movement of her soft body arousing his to the point of pain. He held his breath until the near overwhelming sensations eased.

On one level, he did not fully trust her, but on all others he wanted to learn all there was to know about her. Her heroic efforts to go out of her way to help him were troubling, as was the timing of her arrival. He could not disprove that she was an art buyer from Los Angeles as she claimed, but her arrival at his home at the same time his brother decided to put his scheme into action seemed too large a coincidence. That she had not run while she had the chance on not one but two occasions did not bode well for her complete innocence in this puzzling scenario. Surely a mere art buyer would have fled for her life at the first opportunity.

Then again, had she done so he would be dead right now.

He wanted to believe her. She had, in fact, saved his life. For that, he owed her his allegiance, at least temporarily.

It had been a very long time since he had allowed anyone close enough to make him wish for things he did not have. He wanted for little and the idea of wanting more seemed far too selfish. Yet he could not push aside this need she had awakened.

If she turned out to be his enemy, he could not say that he would not be disappointed. For now, he would give her the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps she was an adventurer. He spent so little time with others that he was not at all sure his judgment was adequately balanced. Once thing was certain—American women were very different from those of his homeland. Maybe if he had bothered with a social life, he would not be so quick to jump to conclusions regarding a strong, determined woman.
